Cover up and protect your MX5 from the elements

Cover up and protect your MX5 from the elements
Friday, 15 November 2019

Obviously, we'd all love to keep our MX5s tucked up in warm, dry garages over the winter months but the reality for many of us makes that a distant dream. So, if your Mazda has to live outside what are your options for keeping the worst of winter off it? Covers are clearly an affordable and portable option you can stash in the boot and fit when required and particularly useful for owners of soft-top MX5s of any generation.

Indeed, for frosty days a half-cover is a useful thing to have for any MX5 and looks better than parking with newspaper on the windscreen and the wipers lifted on frosty nights. Folding into a zipped bag little bigger than a hardback book, you can tuck it away in the boot or cabin easily enough and takes seconds to install when needed. Simply drape it over the roof, stick the mirrors into the 'socks' on the side to keep it in place, loop the elasticated straps under the wheel arches and you're done. Come the morning you'll have it removed and tucked away in less time than it would take to scrape the windows or wait for the car to de-mist, the cover also protecting the hood against rain, bird droppings, sap or whatever else may fall out of the sky onto it.

For longer lay-ups and proper winter hibernation, you may prefer a full cover instead. These are considerably more expensive and heavyweight but offer full weather protection, especially in the toughest, four-layer 'Stormforce' grade. Made of soft fabric to protect your paint it's a far better solution than the traditional tarpaulin, the taped seams ensuring full weatherproofing while the breathable fabric means it won't trap moisture or condensation underneath. it's still worth taking the cover off every now and then to get the car some air, the beauty being you can of course choose a suitable day when the weather is amenable and then get it tucked up and secure again before the rain returns. These are sized according to which mark of MX5 you have, the range now including a fitted cover for Mk4 Convertibles and RFs.
