If you're planning a summer road trip with your MX5 you might be wondering how you'll fit all your stuff in, given none of the generations is particularly spacious in terms of luggage room. We touched on how to get your car roadtrip ready in a previous post but to test the theory properly we got hold of some key travel accessories and tried them out on a new Mk4. don't worry if you drive an older MX5 though - most of the kit here is adaptable and compatible with any generation, though there may be detail differences in how you fit them.
Boot racks are a popular accessory on all MX5s and some owners are happy enough with the retro look to keep one fitted all the time, stainless steel ones like this looking especially good on Mk1s and Mk2s. But what if you prefer the clean look for your car and only need extra space for nights away or road trips? The Boot Bag fits all MX5s and offers a huge amount of extra load space in a secure and fully waterproof package.
Fitting it to the Mk4 took a matter of minutes - see the video for how we got on - and once in place it's absolutely rock solid and looks really neat. you'll want to make sure the boot lid is totally clean before fitting the pad on which it sits, and you need to make sure you don't overload the 10kg weight limit on aluminium Mk4 bootlids, but if you're looking for an adaptable solution it's excellent value for money.
If you don't like the idea of strapping the Boot Bag directly to your bodywork you can of course use it in conjunction with a rack. The best of both worlds solution combining flexibility with smart looks is something like the suction mounted Revo Rack, again compatible with any MX5 but with more modern looks more in keeping with the styling of the Mk3 or Mk4.
Again, you'll want to make sure your bootlid is totally clean before fitting. But attaching it really is the work of seconds and the pump-action suction pads are totally secure, the safety line on the pumps offering a visual confirmation it's attached properly. The one possible disadvantage is the ease with which it can be removed - if you're parking up you'll probably want to remove it and place it inside the car or find some other means of securing it to protect your stuff. But for tents, sleeping bags and other camping gear it's a perfect solution. Whatever you're carrying don't forget your luggage straps, our range going from the functional to more premium options in leather or with full Mazda branding.
For those who prefer to travel first class and use hotels the more premium solution is a fitted luggage set, examples of which are available for...
You'll still have to pack relatively lightly but the luggage at least fits neatly into the boot space with space either side for smaller items, soft bags or coats and the like. You get three bags, all made to the highest of quality standards, keeping your stuff neatly stowed and making you look like a pro traveller when you arrive at your posh hotel.
