Step 1: Preparing the Car
The first step is to lift the car up using a ramp. If you don't have access to a ramp, you can work on one wheel at a time on a driveway. Once the car is lifted, remove the wheels to gain access to the suspension components.
Step 2: Removing the Springs
Now that the car is prepared, let's start by removing the old springs. Begin by locating the front shock absorber. If your car has Bilstein shocks, they will be black in colour. You will need to loosen the 17mm nut and bolt at the bottom of the shock and the 12mm bracket for the ABS. If your car is newer, you might need to unbolt the anti-roll bar mounts as well.
Once all the necessary bolts are removed, you can detach the upper arm by undoing the two 17mm bolts at the top.
Step 3: Spring Compression
Now that the old spring is exposed, you will need to use a spring compressor to safely remove it from the shock absorber. If you don't have access to a hydraulic spring compressor, you can use a manual one. Make sure to follow the instructions provided with the compressor. Compress the spring until it lifts off the shock, allowing you to remove the bolt at the top and release the spring.
Step 4: Installing the New Springs
With the old spring removed, it's time to install the new lowering springs. Place the rubber top mount on the shock absorber and ensure that the bottom of the spring is seated properly. Use the top assembly and tighten the 14mm bolt to secure everything in place.
Step 5: Reassembling the Suspension
Now that the new springs are in place, it's time to reassemble the suspension components. Follow the reverse process of removing the old springs to attach the shock absorber and upper arm. Make sure to tighten all the bolts securely.
Step 6: Repeat for the Other Side
Once you have completed the process on one side, repeat steps 2-5 for the other side of the car.
Step 7: Lowering the Car
With both sides of the car fitted with the new lowering springs, it's time to lower the car and assess the drop. The front of the car should be noticeably lower, while the back may require some settling time to achieve the desired height.
Final Check and Alignment
After lowering your car, it is important to check the alignment of the wheels. You may notice changes in the camber, toe, and caster values. It is recommended to have a professional perform a wheel alignment to ensure optimal performance and tyre wear.
