The New Mazda Spirit Racing MX-5 - Here's What We Know

The New Mazda Spirit Racing MX-5 - Here's What We Know
Friday, 24 January 2025

Mazda are well known for rolling out special editions throughout the history of the MX-5 and in recent years introduced the “Spirit Racing” variant, with the “Mazda Spirit Racing MX-5 RS” concept being launched at last January’s 2024 Tokyo Auto Salon.

At this year’s 2025 annual show, Mazda announced two production variants of the concept called “the "Mazda Spirit Racing (MSR) Roadster" and the "Mazda Spirit Racing Roadster 12R."

Both model variants are sure to turn heads and boast many of the same upgrades, but there is one big difference that is causing quite a stir as one model is going where no factory MX-5 has gone before, 200bhp!

A Nod to Mazda’s Racing Heritage

The Spirit Racing MX-5 pays homage to Mazda’s rich motorsport history. From its iconic Le Mans win with the 787B to its grassroots support of amateur racing, Mazda’s DNA is steeped in a love for the track. This special edition embodies that spirit, blending the MX-5’s everyday usability with serious performance credentials.

The MSR 12R Power Boost to 200 BHP

For the first time, Mazda MX-5 Spirit Racing Roadster 12R will come with 200 brake horsepower straight from the factory honouring the #12 MSR Roadster race car competing in Japan's Super Taikyu racing series.

Mazda’s engineers have worked their magic to fine-tune the 2.0-litre Skyactiv-G engine, giving it that extra kick while maintaining the MX-5’s signature lightweight and agile feel. If you’ve ever wanted a bit more punch from your MX-5, the MSR 12R model is the one, but be warned, only 200 units are set to be manufactured.

 Track-Ready Upgrades

This isn’t just a power upgrade; as both variants will come packed with performance-focused enhancements that make it track-ready straight out of the box.

These include a revised suspension setup for sharper handling, upgraded brakes for improved stopping power, and lightweight alloy wheels wrapped in sticky, performance-oriented tyres. All of this is aimed at giving drivers a more connected, thrilling experience behind the wheel.

Exclusive Styling

Of course, it wouldn’t be a special edition without some standout visual cues. The Spirit Racing MX-5 features exclusive badging, a striking body kit, and unique paint options that ensure it looks as good as it drives.

Mazda hasn’t revealed the full colour palette just yet, but expect some bold, sporty finishes that make this model stand out from the crowd.

Limited to Just 200 Units

The limited 200 production run means you’ll need to act fast if you want to secure the MSR 12R. Given the MX-5’s loyal fanbase and the added appeal of the Spirit Racing upgrades, it’s safe to say these will sell out in no time.

UK Availability

While pricing and exact availability details for the UK market are yet to be confirmed, it’s expected that both models of the Mazda Spirit Racing MX-5 will come with a premium price tag compared to the standard MX-5. But for collectors and enthusiasts, the exclusivity and performance upgrades will undoubtedly make it an attractive proposition.

One for the Ages

The Mazda Spirit Racing MX-5 is shaping up to be a dream car for MX-5 enthusiasts. With its boosted performance, track-focused enhancements, and ultra-limited production, it’s a car that’s destined to become a future classic.

Whether you’re a die-hard MX-5 fan or just love the idea of an agile, high-performance roadster, this special edition is one to watch and is sure to go down in the MX-5 history books.
